本教材結合中國學生的特點，介紹中西方文化基礎知識，培養大學生對文化差異的感知能力、理解能力和分析能力，從而幫助學生在跨文化語境中，拓寬靠前視野，樹立優選意識，實現有效溝通，達到特定交際目的。教材選擇中西方文化核心話題，共分為十二個單元，圍繞跨文化交際意識、跨文化交際實踐與跨文化交際能力評價三個緯度，每單元包括既互相聯系又相互區別的三個專題： 1. 文化知識專題。系統介紹中國及英美等主要西方國家歷史文化、文學藝術、高等教育、社會生活等，以提高學生對中西方國家民族特性、價值觀念、社會結構、人際關系、社會習俗等的認知。2. 文化比較專題。以文化雙向表達為核心，對中西方文化在某一方面的異同進行比較與分析，以提高學生對文化差異的敏感性和寬容度。 3. 文化探索和實踐。采用不同語境下的跨文化交際實際案例，通過討論、演講、辯論、項目報告等教學活動，以培養和考查學生在行為層面上完成跨文化交際任務的能力。
